Let’s be real...managing adults is no small feat.
It’s a balancing act of understanding diverse personalities, aligning conflicting priorities, and fostering a cohesive, motivated team.
As I've worked with clients and supported them through learning how to effectively manage adults while developing their leadership I've had a few reflections on why this can be such a significant challenge:
1. Diverse Personalities and Preferences We all know that adults come with their own set of experiences, personalities, and work styles. This diversity is a strength, but it also means we need to adapt our approach to meet each individual where they are. Understanding and appreciating these differences is crucial, yet it can be challenging to cater to everyone’s unique preferences..all the while managing our own "stuff."
2. Conflicting Priorities and Goals In any organization, individuals often have their own priorities that don’t always align with the bigger picture. Balancing these individual goals with the overarching mission of the organization requires finesse. It’s about communication, negotiation, and sometimes a bit of compromise to keep everyone on the same page.
3. Resistance to Change Change is inevitable, but it’s also something that many adults resist, especially if it disrupts their routine. As leaders, we need to effectively guide our teams through transitions, providing clear reasons for changes, and offering support to help them adapt. It’s about making change feel less like an upheaval and more like an evolution.
4. Autonomy and Independence Unlike students or newer employees, seasoned adults value their autonomy and independence. They want to feel trusted and respected in their roles. Finding the right balance between providing guidance and allowing them the freedom to innovate can be tricky, but it’s essential for maintaining morale and motivation.
5. Experience and Expertise With experience comes strong opinions and established ways of doing things. This can lead to clashes in the workplace. As leaders, it’s our job to leverage this wealth of knowledge while fostering a collaborative environment. Encouraging open dialogue and mutual respect can help turn potential conflicts into productive discussions.
Reflecting on these challenges, it’s clear that effective hiring practices play a critical role in managing adults successfully. Asking the right questions during interviews can help us identify candidates who not only have the technical skills we need but also the adaptive skills to thrive in our dynamic environments.
It takes intentionality... and intentionality takes time...The time that many of us leaders feel we do not have enough of!
We have to be willing to prioritize that intentionality to find the right people who will move sthe chool, organization, business, and/or department forward!!
